What is the Income Guarantee offered by some segregated funds?

The Income Guarantee segregated funds are designed to provide investors with a sustainable and consistent income stream in retirement. The income stream will never decrease, even in poor investment markets. The income stream is based upon a calculation that is done at the time of the investor’s retirement or when they begin to take an income from the segregated fund. Typically, the investor must be 65 years of age or older. The GMWB issuer will guarantee that the client receive 5.0%(or more) of their total invested capital every year for as long as they live. GMWB segregated funds also offer automatic resets that could increase the income and Death Benefit guarantees. The GMWB funds have also built in flexibility for the income payments from segregated funds that are Registered Retirement Income Fund (RRIF) contracts.
