What is the 5-year rule?
Originally intended to assist first-time homebuyers, The HBP plan’s rules were changed by the Government in 1999. One of the changes was to eliminate the restriction that the HBP could only be used once in an individual’s lifetime. Individuals can now use the program multiple times provided that the individual has not owned a home in the 5-year preceding the HBP withdrawal.
