RRSP Account Types

As the figure below illustrates, once you have selected the category of RRSP you wish to open (Individual, Spousal, or Group), you must then decide on the account type. There are two basic types of accounts: Regular or Self-Directed.

The fundamental difference between the two types of accounts is the type of investments that can be held in each account. Both account types and the rules that govern them are discussed in more detail in their corresponding sections: (click below or in the left navigation bar):

• Regular, or
• Self-Directed

Note: All RRSP category types and accounts must follow the same guidelines as set out by Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).
